THE GUY CODE
MEN don't join reading groups because it would violate the "Guy Code" says Ellen Slezak in The Book Group Book.
HOW? She says men of early generations felt these clubs were too feminine.
Now they consider book groups too feminist.
THE ORACLE thinks men DO join book clubs when the topic appeals to them. How about the Finnegan's Wake Group? It has lots of men. Try the reading group entry in in www.google.com and you will have the pick of 3,030,000 reading clubs. www.bookbrowse.com has data on starting your own club or finding an existing club that dovetails with your interests.

THE GAL CODE
WOMEN'S FICTION is the name given novels that men would not touch with a ten foot bookmark. When a literary agent seeks "women's fiction," she is seeking formula romances, romantic novels or light fiction written by women. Webster's defines romantic as "prose narrative treating imaginary characters involved in events remote in time or place and usually adventurous or mysterious.
There are romance groups, as well as all sorts of topical groups. There are groups that read only mysteries, only non-fiction, or only the works of a certain author. If you don't belong to a book discussion group investigate this way to get the most out of reading.
